The Financial Times is looking to identify the top European patent law firms for securing patents and protecting European innovation. For the fifth year running, we will rank the firms in six broad sectors:

The FT’s partner, Statista, the market research provider, will compile the list based on a survey enlisting the help of our readers. A special report featuring the final list, plus articles exploring the work and role of European patent attorneys, will appear in the FT in print and online this summer.

The survey will collect peer recommendations from patent attorneys registered with the European Patent Office (EPO) as well as nominations from clients who have used a patent law firm in one of the 39 member states of the Munich-based EPO*.

The deadline for submissions is March 17, 2023. Separately, Statista will invite selected patent attorneys and clients to participate via email. If you have not received your invitation yet, you can also take part in our survey via this link.

Participation is free and the survey takes just a few minutes to complete. All responses will be anonymised for publication. No self-recommendations are allowed. The survey is available in English, German, French and Italian.

The FT will publish the list online as an interactive table with firms grouped in one of three categories.

L&L Holding and BlackRock’s Murray Hill office tower just got a major vote of confidence from its top tenant.

Kansas City-based law firm Polsinelli inked a 10-year lease renewal and expansion at L&L and BlackRock’s 600 Third Avenue, adding a fourth floor and roughly 13,100 square feet to its footprint.

The renewal brings Polsinelli’s footprint at the 42-story tower to more than 52,500 square feet, making it the property’s largest tenant. The law firm has occupied just over 39,000 square feet across three floors in the building since 2015. The New York Post first reported the deal.

L&L’s David Berkey represented the landlord in-house, while CBRE’s Kevin McLennan, Ian Murphy and Silvio Petriello represented Polsinelli. The CBRE team declined to comment on the lease. Asking rents for the space ranged from $80 to $90 per square foot, the Commercial Observer reported.

The 575,200-square-foot property is now 94 percent leased, with other notable tenants including law firm Aaronson Rappaport and investment management firm 3G Capital.

Polsinelli’s Gabriel Dabiri told The Real Deal that the firm needed more space after growing its New York presence by 63 percent last year, though the expansion only ups its office space by about a third.

Law firms and finance companies, a traditional backbone of Manhattan’s office market, appear to be regaining market share as technology companies pull back on space following a decade-long leasing binge. Financial, insurance, real estate and law firms accounted for 43 percent of office leases signed in the borough last year, an increase from 2021, while the share of leases signed by tenants in the technology, media and information sectors declined to 19 percent, according to a

Nov 2 (Reuters) – More than two dozen major U.S. law firms sent a letter on Wednesday to the deans of the nation’s top-ranked law schools expressing concern over a wave of antisemitism and intimidation on university campuses amid the latest fighting between Israel and Hamas.

The 27 firms urged 14 of the top-ranked law schools in the U.S. to take a “unequivocal stance” against discrimination and harassment and said they “look forward” to learning from law schools how they are addressing the situation on their own campuses.

“There is no room for antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism or any other form of violence, hatred or bigotry on your campuses, in our workplaces or our communities,” reads the firms’ letter, which cites reports of antisemitic harassment, vandalism, and rallies calling for the elimination of Israel on college campuses.

A Sullivan & Cromwell spokesperson said on Thursday that senior chair Joseph Shenker spearheaded the letter to the law schools known in the legal industry as the “T-14,” as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Other signatories include some on the nation’s biggest and most profitable law firms, including Cravath, Swaine & Moore; Latham & Watkins; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

University of California, Berkeley law dean Erwin Chemerinsky said on Thursday that he welcomes the firms’ statement condemning antisemitism, Islamophobia and racism but was unclear on next steps.

“I am unsure what the law firms are asking law schools to do, but it is certainly our role to protect the freedom of speech of all of our students, while also ensuring that there is a conducive learning environment and preparing students

US law firm Holland & Knight expands in Mexico with 17-lawyer group

  • June 12, 2023

(Reuters) – Florida-founded law firm Holland & Knight has added 17 lawyers, including seven partners, to its ranks in Mexico from local law firm Sánchez Devanny, the firm said Thursday.

Most of the team joined Holland & Knight’s Monterrey, Mexico, office, which the firm added through its 2021 merger with U.S. firm Thompson & Knight. Several other lawyers are based in Mexico City.

The lawyers from Sánchez Devanny specialize in areas including corporate law, international trade, tax and environmental law, and represent clients in Mexico’s industrial sector, according to Holland & Knight.

Holland & Knight said it now has 62 Mexico-based attorneys. The firm has nearly 2,000 lawyers globally.

Luis Rubio Barnetche, executive partner of Holland & Knight’s Mexico City office, said Monterrey is a fast-growing city and there is high demand for legal services in the area as more global companies move in.

Latin American and cross-border work has long been a focus for Holland & Knight. Gerardo Prado Hernández, a new partner joining the firm in Monterrey, cited that “sharp focus on Latin America” in a statement and said moving to the larger firm would help his group expand their client offerings.

A spokesperson from Sánchez Devanny, which has three offices in Mexico, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Law firm said past automaker testimony before Congress resulted in action on vehicle safety issues.

A California law firm representing some Hyundai and Kia owners in lawsuits against the carmakers over thefts is urging Congress to take action on the issue.

It’s the latest development in a series of pushbacks against the South Korean brands to more aggressively address the thefts of models without immobilizing antitheft technology as standard.

Multiple major U.S. cities have sued the automakers, about two dozen attorneys general have urged them to take stronger action about the thefts, and 18 states have asked a federal regulator to recall the 2011- to 2022 models in question.

Now MLG Attorneys at Law has written a letter to Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell to take up the matter as chairwoman of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. The firm said in a statement that the committee has previously brought automakers to testify before Congress, resulting in action on vehicle safety issues.

MLG said it’s leading a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai and Kia over the thefts. It said it’s now representing a growing list of personal-injury cases related to the thefts.

The carmakers have expedited measures intended to prevent thefts and help vehicle owners get their models insured, including speeding up a software update and working with insurer AAA to insure affected models. But the increasingly loud pushback from various corners maintains they’re not doing enough.

London and Birmingham-based law firm AxiomDWFM is to rescue the legal business of the collapsed Ince Group, saving close to 700 jobs.

The Ince Group — once London’s largest listed law firm — announced that it would enter administration earlier this month. The 150-year-old company formerly known as Gordon Dadds Group said a lengthy auditing process, after BDO LLP determined there were “matters outstanding” with its accounts in Hong Kong, put “increasing pressure” on its cash flows.

The Aldgate-headquartered business, which employed over 700 staff and had revenues of over £100 million in the year to March 2021, was at one point the largest listed law firm in the UK.

The deal will only cover the group’s legal arm, which will go by Ince & Co, and not its other business such as financial advisory services. However, a spokesperson said the amount of jobs saved in the acquisition would be close to 700, located around the world.

Donald Brown, CEO of the Ince & Co. legal business, said he was thankful his team had secured new ownership, but also hit out at previous management of the wider group, which he took over the day-to-day operations of after administration.

“This acquisition of the Ince businesses will give the firm, our team and our clients a simple and clear corporate and capital structure under professional, knowledgeable and robust ownership,” he said. “We are underpinned by a group of immensely talented lawyers with deep expertise in our key sectors.

“After taking over the management of the PLC group, it quickly became apparent that we needed to address a series of poorly structured and executed transactions

Racine Receives Legal Aid DC Honor

  • June 6, 2023

Former DC Attorney General Karl A. Racine received one of two Servant of Justice Awards from Legal Aid DC during its 33rdrd annual dinner at the JW Marriott Hotel in Northwest on April 19.

The Servant of Justice Award is designed to “celebrate people who have demonstrated faithful dedication and remarkable achievement in ensuring that all persons have equal and meaningful access to justice,” according to the organization’s program. Legal Aid DC assists over 9,000 low-and-middle income Washingtonians with civil cases and has a staff of 90.65 of whom are attorneys.

Previous recipients of the Award include Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (posthumously in 1993), former US Attorney General Eric Holder (1998) and retired founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund Marian Wright Edelman (2016).

Racine served as the District’s first elected attorney general from 2015-2023. He gained national recognition for supporting District statehood, advocating on behalf of a woman’s right to an abortion, and aggressively pursuing companies violating residents’ consumer and civil rights. He currently works as a partner for the Hogan Lovells law firm.

“Legal Aid DC is a juggernaut in the public interest,” Racine said to the gathering of over 300 people. “At the Office of the Attorney General, we used the law to help vulnerable residents.”

The co-recipient of the Servant Award was David Dantzic, a partner with the Latham & Watkins law firm. Other awardees were Cozen O’Connor law firm associate Josephine M. Bahn for the Klepper Prize for Volunteer Service. Resident Farhana Chowdhury and the Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project co-received The Partnership Award.

Notables attending the event included DC Superior Court Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring and Erek Barron, the US Attorney for Maryland.
